1) That I will miss those assignments, quizzes, midsems, classes and exams that actually made me frustrated for 4 years :-)

2) That People won’t be that nice in this outside world. You will rarely find people who will do something for you without expecting anything in return. Unlike my best buddies helped me to cheat in exams.

3) That I will never find 10 guys to have Cricket match in Basketball ground.

4) That Beer at OAT with few batchmates tastes better than in a Bar.

5) That I will die to organize new fests/events in campus again.

6) That Food of “Bajpai Dhaba” at 3 AM tastes far better than at Italian restaurant.

7) That there won’t be Tuesdays when I used to shout “Aaj to Lab nahi hai”. Everyday will be of same hours.

8) That I won’t be as crazy as I was. Every decision will depend on many more things apart from just my craziness.

9) That I have to learn to dress up properly for few meetings instead of my usual style in chappals.

10) That Everyday will be fucking challenging.

P.S. : This shapeless soul tweet at @sbaghla

"Mein Daalega" are not words but that's an Attitude !!

I watched this video for 20+ times in last one week and posted on all the fb groups I am part of. Have a look if you have’t seen it yet :

“Mein Daalega” is actually an attitude to do almost anything that you can do. I am not saying you should do almost everything in this world. Even I haven’t seen Tendulkar doing fast bowling on field. It’s just that you should be ready to give your 100% on whatever you can do.

No one can do everything. Even I can’t hack facebook’s open API graphs by tomorrow morning. It’s just that I am ready to give my 100% on whatever I am asked to do. We always welcome people with “Mein Daalega” attitude in our team at bluegape. If you think you have the “Mein Daalega” attitude, Just tweet me @sbaghla. I worked very closely with most of them. I love working with IITians (I never meant to say I don’t love working with other champs!) and here are my few observations about IITians :

1) They can pretty easily match with frequency of your brain waves and grasp everything going on there. It’s very easy to make them understand any complicated thing.

2) They love numbers and you need to prove anything in front of them with numbers. They won’t accept facts without numbers.

3) They can work for multiple days without sleep if you can just arrange proper supply of chai, sutta and beer. They are damn hard working.

4) They can wear multiple hats. One of them I interviewed for the position of web developer and asked if he need a designer to work with him on this project. He replied “Nahi, maine design khud se sikh liya tha. yeh designers 2-3 din le lete hai ek button bana ne mei jo mei 10 min mei bana leta ho”.

5) They will argue until they are satisfied. If they truly believe in something, they will go to any extent to prove their point.

I just wrote it from the point of view of an entrepreneur and working with them in a startup. They are just more than awesome in personal life as a friend :-)

P.S. : I tweet @sbaghla

There are two kind of mistakes in this world !!

People make mistakes at each and every level. Who knows it better than an Entrepreneur :-). Many people will advice you to learn from others’ mistakes but believe me I have rarely seen people who learn from others’ mistakes. Nothing teaches you more than your own mistakes. Your own mistakes will give you life time experience and even a story to tell/teach others for ages. I see people making mistakes that I have made earlier. Sometimes I feel like going to them and say “Dude, this is exactly what I was doing six months back” but sometimes I don’t.

Now there are TWO kind of mistakes in this world :

1) You are doing something wrong and you are just NOT aware about that. Many people will tell you that this is wrong but you just don’t want to listen to them as you don’t feel it wrong. Believe me that’s perfect. If you believe whatever you are doing is right, I would suggest you to just follow your intuition in that case. You are awesome! Make that mistake. If it’s wrong you will get a lifetime experience but if it will work, you can kick thousand of those asses :-)

2) You are doing something wrong and you already know that. You still want to do that to experience it yourself. Have you ever met people like that. huh?

P.S. : I don’t know why you have spent your three minutes in reading this :-D or if this makes any sense. I just woke up at 2 AM and feel liking scribbling something so wrote it. Now please don’t hit me with chappal for wasting your time ;-)

P.P.S. : I scribble most of the time on twitter @sbaghla ! Catch me there :-)

bluegape.com have to be a successful business because of these 10 people !!

Many times I feel low at work. Personal, Professional or whatever reasons. I always remember about these 10 people and get back to work. bluegape.com have to be successful business because of you.

1) Ayush Varshney : Still in his third year when most of his batchmates don’t understand the p of professionalism. He was writing code while everyone else is busy hitting on hot babes of DU at Antaragni (BTW, Antaragni is going on at IITK).

2) TLabs : We were hardly doing any transactions, no business plan, nothing and they handed over cheque of 10 Lakh rupees to do business. Knowing the fact that we were still undergrads with no business skills.

3) Parents : When a decision made not to sit for college placements my college seniors started feeling the trouble with this decision of mine. Seniors knew about sick corporate culture even then they were not convinced with my life plan. My parents got agree in couple of hours.

4) Uncle : We were almost out of cash to launch new products and give salaries and this guy, whom we call uncle handed us another cheque so that we can continue our business.

5) Everyone else in team : There are n number of people (I actually can’t name them all as I don’t want to miss one or two. More than 20 people) who went sleepless for many days while writing code, making designs etc to make it a great startup.

6) All vendors : We initially worked with multiple vendors in Kanpur and Now in Delhi. They helped us while we were doing 1-2 transactions a day. They were not making any money in those transactions but were just helping us to see a great startup in front of their eyes.

7) My rockstar girl : I just broke up with my last girl but I guess I have to fall in love for atleast three time. ;-) (Why? Read here)

8) All the well wishers : I know many people who are promoting bluegape.com in all the possible conversations and everywhere they can without any personal incentives. They just want to see it big.

9) All the aspiring entrepreneurs : I know more than 100 aspiring entrepreneurs who are following bluegape.com to decide if startups just after college is a good thing or not. I don’t want anyone of them to die. (Why? Read here)

10) For myself : What should I say?

P.S. : I still tweet @sbaghla

"Whenever I see a brilliant kid decide to join Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, or Google, I think to myself:..."

“Whenever I see a brilliant kid decide to join Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, or Google, I think to myself: a startup just died, and as a result our world is a little less wealthy, innovative, and interesting.”

- by Chris Dixon

10 things to do just after break up

<strike>1) Try to convince her for 1 hour and say sorry for all of your mistakes. </strike>

<strike>2) Block her and all of her friends from your Facebook/G-talk/Twitter.</strike>

<strike>3) Delete her number, her Mom’s Number, her’s Friend’s Number etc.</strike>

<strike>4) Through away any gift you ever got from her.</strike>

<strike>5) Delete all photographs of her from your desktop and cellphone.</strike>

<strike>6) Clean up your message box of phone for all incoming as well as sent texts.</strike>

<strike>7) Have a beer with your single friends and tell them how awesome their life is.</strike>

<strike>8) Break two or three items at your home. (Make sure they are not expensive)</strike>

(If you believe life is too short to do all this. Just start from here :-) )

9) Wake up next morning after a hangover. Check out all rockstar girls on your Facebook and figure out that girl you liked before your relationship and is still single. Propose that girl and go on a date.

10) …and buy this poster from bluegape.com :-)

I met with many Entrepreneurs and asked them same questions over and over again. Sometimes I got convinced by the answers sometimes I don’t. Here’s few most frequently asked questions by me and their best answers according to me. (These are piece of advice from many entrepreneurs I met in last couple of years. Few names are : Sameer Guglani, Kris Nair, Mahesh Murthy, Aloke Bajpai, Kunal Bahl and many more…)

When is a good time to start working on your idea - When you can’t stop thinking about it in a shower.

Single Founder vs Co-founders - Don’t wait ! You can start alone, but you definitely need smart people to grow your business big. Prove yourself and Rockstars will join you.

When should you start talking to the investors - Smart guys always stay in touch with their investors. Famous saying is : When you need money ask for advice and when you need advice ask for money.

Where to find co-founders - Please don’t go to co-founders dating events. Great businesses are built when few friends sit together in a dorm room with open minds.

Where to find tech co-founder - Either in your facebook friend list or sit in a CCD with codecademy.com

How to generate Entry Barrier for your business : Chuck it man ! When you start building your business with love and passion you will definitely differentiate yourself from somewhere. Don’t worry about this term at initial stage. Copycats will always be there. Service is only the differentiator in the long run.

What Investors look for in a pitch when Ideas are like buses - Your Idea defines you. It defines what problem are you solving and how are you approaching for that problem. That will tell all about you. They mostly look for your execution skills so it matters a lot if you are presenting it in a ppt form or as a demo product (An ounce of action worth ton of theory).

P.S. : I still tweet @sbaghla and run an awesome startup bluegape.com (India’s Biggest Personalization Store)

[Hiring] Looking for a full time php developer at bluegape

At bluegape.com, We are looking for a full time php developer.

Even I wrote down a post at Pi that how I want to build my e-commerce company. After six months of hard work we somehow reached to 10 transactions a day. But even then that profit was not enough to support our bare minimum expenses of food, beer and rent of flat.

We started up with couple of lakhs in our bank account and even after making every transaction profitable, the money in our account was going down. I sat down with pen and paper to calculate that how many transactions a day can take us to profit that can cover our expenses of food, beer and rent of flat (Provided my rockstar girl bears all the expenses of our date, Thanks to her!). I figured out that almost 25 transactions a day can make a team of 4 rockstars self sustainable. Believe me, without spending dollars on marketing, it will take 3 more months to reach to 25 transactions a day. Even then we will be just self sustainable (My rockstar girl still have to bear expenses of our date).

Last Week, we changed our strategy from being profitable in each transaction to build a scale. We ran a marketing campaign with freecharge for Satyamev Jayate t-shirts. We did on an average 70 transactions a day in the last whole week. Let me tell you what has changed in this week :

Energy in the team was phenomenal. It looks like a new customer is getting registered on site every moment. Everyone was cheering up.

Tone of our vendors was completely different from when we used to go to them with 3-4 T-shirts, posters and mugs to print.

We acquired many new customers in one week and then we reached them all with a follow up call. What we realized is that some of them will never return to our website because they just came for the discount. But there were almost 40% of customers said that they would love to buy again if they like our service.

I am still with my point that value creation is the only key to build a great business but may be one has to use such marketing campaigns to take the word out quickly. If they will like our services, we will get our loyal customers and that’s the whole game.

The last whole week led me to think if it’s good idea to focus too much on profitability or focus on reaching to a scale. What’s your thought?

P.S.: I still tweet @sbaghla !

That’s How I Want To Build My E-Commerce Company !

Yes! I am a Co-founder at bluegape.com. I am one of those champs who prefers to order it online whenever my MOM asks me to bring some vegetables from the market. I am a passionate follower of most of the e-commerce companies of India. I have tweeted/retweeted almost every funding/acquisition news of the e-commerce industry. I can tell you the name of CEOs of all the e-commerce companies. Sometimes I feel I know Sachin of Flipkart, Mukesh of Myntra, Kunal of Snapdeal as if they all are my classmates. May be that’s the reason I started bluegape.com last year. We have a good traction, profits and everything. But there is something that made me bit skeptical about the success of e-commerce industry. Let me start here :

Everyday few new emails pop up into my account asking to put bluegape discount coupons on their website. We have put our coupons on most of the mobile recharge sites and some other deal sites. Guess what, we got a good amount of traction from them. But I was always curious to see what can excite people about bluegape and it’s products apart from giving away discounts coupons. For me It was more important to understand what is that actually excites a customer about most of the e-commerce companies. A quick google search gave me this result :

And the results were very astonishing for me. It’s always the word discount coupon that follows after the company’s name. Is this due to customers who have changed their perspective for the e-commerce companies or Is it e-commerce companies who are in the league to lure their customers with fancy discount coupons. Whatever be the case is, but I am sure this psychology will ruin the e-commerce industry in India soon. Then I took a deep breathe and did the same exercise for Amazon and here’s the result :

People search Amazon for it’s products and not because of coupon codes. They love Amazon for what it delivers.

Now may be all these e-commerce companies can call it customer acquisition cost as they have million dollars in their bank account from their VCs and I don’t. But even if I will raise million dollars as I want to build a company where people will know bluegape because of it’s product, value and services, not because of discount codes. I want people to actually understand the need of my company in their life.

Okay, I am getting out of this league of discount game. Let me have a beer tonight and start the same journey with new approach.

P.S. : Give me a shout on twitter @sbaghla and say best of luck with #bluegape

Geeks can change the world, OK?

I was born in 1990 and things completely changed in past 22 years. We invented the future the way it is :

1990 : Sabeer Bhatia was in very initial phase of his idea to make Hotmail.

1995 : Internet/www was still unheard weird word. Remember that naukri.com story?

2000 : The land line phones were the most preferred choice and cell phones were just an option of Big Shot guys

2004 : ohh man, Zuckerberg was just a random guy, writing a piece of code for “thefacebook”

2007 : Apple was busy in the celebration of the first iPhone’s launch

2012+ : Now you can trust me that world will no more be same in next 5 years. Let me be little optimistic and write some code to make a dent in the universe.

How all these made a change in my life :

1) My day starts with long list of emails and twitter stream to see what’s up in the world instead of those 10 hours of old news from newspaper.

2) Instead of Windows, I use open source Ubuntu on my laptop.

3) My first cell phone was Samsung Guru 100 and now life seems impossible without smartphone/android phone. (I am a die hard apple fan. It’s just that every time I go to an apple store, my account statement Smiles and says “SORRY DUDE, work hard”)

4) I used iPad for 15 days when one of my friends asked me to get it for him from US. After having a first look at it, The only thought ran through my mind was “Design can rule the world”

5) I am ready to pay 10$ a month to Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook, Google etc to keep them up if they plan to shut their websites tomorrow.

How could the mankind ever thought of a life without all these?

FYI, We launched an awesome collection of geek merchandise (Posters, T-Shirts and Mugs) at bluegape. Click here to experience the awesomeness in a GEEKY way..!!!

Also, Have a look at our IPL contest : http://ipl.bluegape.com to win iPad 2.

P.S. : I still tweet @sbaghla

What did we learn in 13 weeks at TLabs.

In last two days I have got 10+ calls to get feedback on TLabs accelerator program and almost everyone of them had the same set of questions/queries. Most of the questions were in two categories : 1) Will they select me? 2) Should I apply for the program?

For the first question, I would just say that they are a big fan of execution so show your demo instead of ppt/b-plan.

For the second question, Let me share what we at bluegape.com have learned from the whole program so that you can decide if you want to apply or not.

1) Now I can read the next term sheet from investor without the help of lawyer/CA. I know the meaning of all the terms like option pool, pre-money valuation, post-money valuation, vesting, liquidation preferences, everything.

2) Many early adopters of bluegape.com are from TLabs network.

3) Now I know what it takes to scale up a startup and need of clear vision statement. Who said it’s tough to do a startup. I must say it’s very easy to do a startup but the whole issue is to keep it running and that’s what we learned at TLabs.

4) How to do team meetings and make them effective is what Abhishek will teach you there.

5) You will get noticed in whole startup community.

6) Pankaj will teach you to use most of the networking sites effectively.

7) You will network with rockstars who have changed/dream to change the world. Most of the successful entrepreneurs, innovators.

…and the list goes on !

If you want some posters for your startup, don’t forget to check this awesome collection of startup posters at bluegape !

P.S. : I still tweet @sbaghla

Beautiful :-)

Beautiful :-)

Some immature thoughts on Facebook IPO and Valuation

I am one of those kids who are a very big fan of Zuckerberg. I have kept a special place for him by putting his poster on my wall. I was accessing #facebookipo on tweetdeck from last 3 days to see all the latest happenings on IPO.

I have seen lot of hate tweets/articles on $104B valuation and YES, they all have a valid point. Facebook has $3.7B revenue and $1B profits last year. They are valued at more than 100x times of their profit and 25x times of their revenue. I don’t know how valuation thing being taught in MBA class but that must be not be more than 5x times of revenue, right? Google has a valuation of $200B and revenue of $40B which is 5x, right? Cool.

I guess here companies get valued not based on their revenue/profit but based on their impact and future projections. Okay let’s take a simple example : If facebook decide to shut the site tomorrow, how many of you are ready to pay $2 (INR 100) a month to keep it alive? What about those big brands who have facebook pages with more than 1 lakh likes. At bluegape facebook fanpage, we have just 1300 likes but still 30% of our traffic comes from facebook. Dude, almost 1/3rd of bluegape.com business is because of facebook. I guess that is true for most of the businesses atleast based on how effectively they are using facebook.

If we just pause for a moment and think that according to Alexa, facebook is the second most visited site on earth even after getting blocked in few countries including China. The valuation of facebook is not based on revenue or profits, It is based on how facebook is actually changing the world. Now I must say this is a safe bet to buy facebook shares at $104B valuation as the company is worth more than that actually. To make you little comfortable just don’t predict anything based on current revenue model of facebook. I mean C’mon, Google had no clue of their revenue model for first 4-5 years. Both facebook and google have 900 million users. You must accept this fact that zuckerberg is smart enough to come up with better revenue model with the current user base.

These are just random musings from this shapeless soul based on what I learned in my Entrepreneurial Journey. I just want to end this post with a big hi5 to zuckerberg and team

Why my next 6 years are so challenging and what motivates me to work days and nights.

Here are few things about zuckerberg that makes me feel proud (as well as jealous ).

1) He runs a company that is about to go for IPO with a valuation of 100 billion dollars – Just Imagine !!

2) He has been on the cover page of Time Magazine – How did you feel when you were on the cover page of college/school magazine?

3) He already has a movie made about him !!

4) Almost every hot babe on earth know his name – …and probably crave to have sex too

5) He is already one of the signatories of Giving Pledge campaign initiated by Gates and Buffett – He has a golden heart too.

6) He is youngest billionaire of the world – No words!! How much you have in your bank account?

7) He can single handily buy billion dollar companies. (Tagtile, Instagram) – How much time it took you to spend 50K on your laptop?

…and the list goes on.

Time to have a look back on it.

1) To read 12 books : Read just one by now. You already know which one ;-). 11 more to go.

2) To make bluegape trend on twitter : Not successful yet. But we are working hard to make bluegape popular and trend. Have you checked new look of bluegape.com ?

3) To graduate from IITK without ‘F’ : Done! \m/

4) To buy an iPhone and iPad : Looking forward for a gift on my b’day :-)

5) To have a team of 10+ rockstars in bluegape : This is no more in my to-do list now. Bigger team sucks. You know that too many cooks spoil the broth story? It’s cool if we can do wonders with small team. Big team never means big company. Instagram was just 13 rockstars team. One more example to prove that I am not stubborn. ;-)

6) To go on a one week vacation in abroad : How about in September? Lets have a hangover there ;-)

7) To write 50+ blog posts : This is my 16th post of the year. Getting close :-) : http://sbaghla.tumblr.com/archive

8) To learn to make animated videos : Will learn in July. Definitely!

9) To propose her : This point was confusing in my last post. I wrote it in a sense of finding a rockstar girt first ;-)

10) To put check on all nine in this list before the end of this year : :-)

An Entrepreneur’s Promise to his Mom

I still remember your confused face when I first told you that I want to start my own company instead of sitting for the campus placements. I can understand your feelings as most of the relatives were asking me about the package I would be getting after graduation since I have been in second year. I can never be thankful enough for giving me the energy to do what I really wanted to do.

On this mother’s day, I want to make you few promises :

1) I might not be earning big cheques as some of the CS guys of my college would be but I am really enjoying what I am doing and am fine with whatever I am earning. But If I ever go short of money to date my rockstar girl, I won’t hesitate to ask you for some.

2) Sometimes I might not be able to call you for days but that would never mean I don’t remember or miss you. It’s just that things are getting tough for me and I am not in a position to share with you everything because I am afraid of making you sad. But believe me, you gave birth to a very strong kid to handle them all.

3) The road is uncertain, it may happen that I will make tons of mistakes. Reinforce my faith, if that happens because its you who taught me not to fear of mistakes while chasing a dream. I can’t promise you success but I can promise you my hardwork, and I promise that I will leave no stone unturned to make you feel proud of being a mom of an entrepreneur.

4) It might happen that I will fail and get back to the point where I started. At that moment, I just want you to be there to congratulate me for my experience. Believe me, it won’t be end of the world. Just give me some more power to start a fresh journey with much more energy and encourage me to make a dent in the universe. I promise I won’t give up no matter how tough things get.

My friends might be sending fancy gifts to their moms on this mother’s day but I am just sending you this small gift from my own startup to tell you that I Love You and Always Will.

P.S. : Send us your story at sbaghla@bluegape.com and we will publish them on our blog here and if your blog get the maximum likes we will send your mom this cool mug on your behalf.

P.P.S : I still tweet @sbaghla

A simple story of life and death

My Facebook status says “Atheist”. I also doubt the existence of Ramayana and Mahabharata. I have a strong feeling that the two epics are just impressive pieces of fiction with very less reality behind them. Okay! I can understand how most of you must be feeling and planning to slap this shapeless soul (why don’t we discuss about it with an open mind at our bluegape.com office over a glass of beer). I respect your beliefs and am perfectly fine about learning good things from them.

On a separate note, I also believe in God. It is just that I define my God in my own way. Anyone who encourages me to do great things in my life and to carve a niche in this universe is my inspiration, the list of which is amply long.

I am also not a firm believer of this life and death concept. However, if it actually exists, then as people doubt on the existence of God here, people must doubt on the existence of Mom above. Sometimes I feel sad and broken but My Mom always inspired me to move forward every time. All I am and ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother. I believe that is how you define your God too. For me my mom is also my God.

Every year on Mother’s Day, I am short of ideas for a gift for my mom. But this year bluegape.com has created this awesome collection of Customized Mugs and Posters to solve this dilemma for all of us!

1) You are the best mom in this world. (Click here to buy)

2) I believe in love at first sight, because I have loved my mother ever since I opened my eyes. (Click here to buy)

3) I am not perfect but you inspire me to improve. (Click here to buy)

4) We were three, apples were two. Then mom said I don’t like apples. (Click here to buy)

5) I love you mom. (Click here to buy)

6) Yun To Main,Dikhlata Nahin, Teri Parwaah Karta Hoon Main Maa. (Click here to buy)

7) Unse Main Yeh Kehta Nahin, Par Main Seham Jaata Hoon Maa. (Click here to buy)

8 ) All I am and ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother. (Click here to buy)
